Domains in the .au namespace, such as .com.au, .net.au and .au, are managed by auDA, the policy authority for .au domain names. Every .au namespace requires an Australian Presence, but each has its own rules about who can register and which names they can choose.
For example, .com.au and .net.au are for commercial entities, .org.au is for not-for-profit organisations, .asn.au is for not-for-profit organisations and unincorporated associations, .id.au is for individuals, and .au direct is open to anyone with an Australian Presence.
City extensions such as .melbourne and .sydney are separate top-level domains with their own registration policies, which require a connection with Victoria or New South Wales respectively.
