A .au name is registered directly under .au, so it is shorter. A .com.au name includes the .com label. Both are part of the .au namespace managed by auDA.

A direct .au address, such as yourname.au, without a second-level label.
What is .au?
.au domain names are registered directly under the .au namespace, so the address is shorter: yourname.au rather than yourname.com.au.
The .au namespace is managed by auDA, the policy authority for .au domain names.
The .au namespace is managed by auDA (.au Domain Administration Ltd).
Who is .au for?
- .au direct domains are available to eligible individuals, businesses and organisations with an Australian presence.
- Australian citizens and permanent residents can register a .au domain without needing an ABN or ACN.
- Unlike .com.au and .net.au, which are intended for eligible commercial entities, .au direct is also suitable for personal websites, portfolios, community projects, hobbies and other non-commercial uses.
Eligibility
To register a .au direct domain name, you must have an Australian Presence as defined in the auDA .au Licensing Rules, and you must continue to meet this requirement for as long as you hold the domain name.
You can meet the Australian Presence requirement in a number of ways, including if you are:
- an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident visa holder;
- a company registered under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth), or an entity with an Australian Business Number (ABN);
- an incorporated association, registered charity, cooperative or other organisation registered in Australia; or
- the applicant for or owner of an Australian trade mark, for a domain name that exactly matches the words of that trade mark.
An ABN or ACN is not mandatory. Eligible individuals, such as Australian citizens and permanent residents, can rely on their citizenship or residency instead. An ABN or ACN is one of the ways a business or organisation can meet the requirement.
Unlike .com.au and .net.au, which are limited to eligible commercial entities and require the domain name to be connected to the business, a .au direct domain name does not generally need to match or be connected to a business name. The exception is the trade mark pathway: if you rely on an Australian trade mark for your Australian Presence, the domain name must exactly match the words of that trade mark.
You'll be asked for the relevant registrant and eligibility information during registration.
Important: This is a general summary only. The full list of ways to meet the Australian Presence requirement is in the auDA .au Licensing Rules, and the rules can change. Check the current rules before registering.
