.net.au is a common choice when the .com.au name you want is taken, or to protect your name alongside .com.au. The same eligibility rules apply to both, so your .net.au name must still be connected to your business.

An Australian alternative or companion to .com.au.
What is .net.au?
.net.au is an Australian domain extension in the .au namespace.
Businesses often register it as an alternative to, or alongside, a .com.au name.
The .au namespace is managed by auDA (.au Domain Administration Ltd).
Who is .net.au for?
- Australian businesses whose preferred .com.au name is taken (the same eligibility and name rules apply)
- Businesses that want to protect their name across several .au extensions
Eligibility
To register a .net.au domain name, you must have an Australian Presence and meet the eligibility and allocation rules set by auDA. The rules for .net.au are the same as for .com.au.
You must be a commercial entity. Under the auDA rules, commercial entities include, for example:
- a company registered under the Corporations Act 2001 (Cth), or a foreign company registered in Australia with an ARBN;
- a sole trader, partnership, trust or other entity with an Australian Business Number (ABN);
- an incorporated association, incorporated limited partnership, trading cooperative or a statutory body that engages in trade or commerce; or
- a person or foreign entity that holds or has applied for an Australian trade mark. If the trade mark is your only connection to Australia, the domain name must exactly match the words of the trade mark.
Your chosen .net.au domain name must also be connected to you. It must be:
- a match or acronym of your company, business, statutory or personal name;
- a match of your Australian trade mark;
- a match or acronym of the name of a related Australian company, a partnership you are a partner in, or a trust you are a trustee of; or
- a match or synonym of the name of a service you provide, goods you sell, an event you register or sponsor, an activity you facilitate, teach or train, or premises you operate, at the time you apply.
An ABN is a common way to qualify as a commercial entity, but it is not the only one. You'll be asked for the relevant registrant and eligibility information during registration.
Important: This is a general summary only. Eligibility requirements can change and different .au namespaces have different rules. Check the current auDA Licensing Rules before registering.
